Last weekend I flew to Detroit for a few days to find an apartment, I had appointments at three different places and ended up only going to the first two. Both places were nice, had good space, and were safe (a key element when you are a single girl living in a city you've barely visited). That is about where the comparison stops as the first building was a much newer building and reflected elements of the 70s and 80s.
It was clean, had amazing spacious closets, a nice size kitchen, and a good size living room and bedroom. But on first glance it did not look like a place I could see myself living in. There was nothing wrong with the place, it just didn't feel like home. I would have been perfectly happy there, but one of the selling points was "you won't be home much because there is so much to do". I like going out, but I'm very much someone who needs time at home by myself and I like having days where I don't go anywhere. If I lived there, I wouldn't really want to be home much and that's not the kind of lifestyle I can see myself living.
The next day I went to visit an apartment that I had already liked from what I had seen online and I was not disappointed. The building was built in the 1930s and used to be a hotel, the building has been remodeled recently but the historical character and original fixtures were kept. Immediately this felt like somewhere I could see myself, just from seeing the lobby. The apartments were spacious, had hardwood floors, and while the closets weren't as big for storage purposes I will still have enough space for what I need.
I made the choice to sign the lease on this building and even though it is a bit more than I was planning on spending on a apartment, I had gotten my official offer the day before and with the number I was given it was able to make this a reality for me. I am so thankful for all the events that allowed for this opportunity and that everything fell into place in order for me to get my dream apartment. I am so lucky to have such a beautiful place to live in and such an amazing city to explore.
Here's to morning river views, trips to Canada for dinner, and finding coffee shops to sit at and get work done. See you soon Detroit!
