Over the past month I had the amazing opportunity to design my first musical and make my debut at a local theater by my undergraduate university. I have loved this show for many years and once I saw they were doing Heathers in their 2019-2020 season I jumped at the slight possibility of being chosen to design the show. Getting the email saying that I was selected to design the show is one of the most amazing moments I have had in the early months of this year.
Designing this show was made an enjoyable and really fun few weeks because of the size of the cast and the director. The fact that I already knew this show and had created a modernized version of it for competition at KCACTF this past February meant that I had images and styles stuck in my head that I had researched very recently. I loved that the cast was smaller and I was able to talk with actors about their characters and have discussions about different aspects. I also loved the interest that many of the actors had in what their character would wear and even brought items in to add as accessories that they wanted my opinion on if it would fit their character's look. It was such a different and great experience that I will remember it forever.
We have just finished our first weekend run and have two more weekends until we close and I begin the next chapter of my life. This show will always mark a very special place in my heart not only because it was many firsts in my life, but it also caps my journey at Anderson University and my first full summer of doing as many shows as I can in three months. Summer Stock has nothing on what I went through this summer and I feel like I am well prepared to begin the rest of my life in a new city and environment.
